Overview

CleanSlate is an automated toilet-seat sanitation system designed to improve bathroom hygiene with a completely hands-free cleaning cycle. The system detects when a user leaves, automatically lowers the toilet lid, and performs a multi-stage cleaning process using soap, water jets, and UV-C LED disinfection.

A custom mechanical design integrates spray nozzles, a controlled water flow system, and a drying mechanism inside a redesigned toilet lid. Sensors monitor presence and ensure safe operation, while the automatic cycle provides consistent cleaning after every use.

The goal of CleanSlate was to create a reliable, affordable, and easy-to-install solution that improves hygiene, reduces contamination risk, and elevates the cleanliness standard of shared bathrooms without requiring user intervention.

Challenge

Public and shared bathrooms often suffer from poor hygiene, surface contamination, and inconsistent cleaning. The challenge was to design a compact, fully automated system that could sanitize a toilet seat reliably without requiring any user involvement, while maintaining safety around water and electricity. The mechanism also needed to fit entirely within the toilet lid and operate quickly to avoid delaying the next user.

Solution

The system uses a presence sensor to detect when a user leaves. Once clear, the lid automatically lowers and begins a multi-stage sanitation cycle: -Soap and water spray to remove residue -Rinse cycle with clean water -UV-C LED disinfection for sterilization -Dry cycle, ensuring the seat is ready for the next user -Automatic reopening of the lid The internal structure was designed in CAD to efficiently house pumps, nozzles, UV elements, wiring, and the motorized lid mechanism — achieving a complete hygiene solution in a compact form.
